Upward Bound Program ( A Federal Trio Program )
Mission
The University of Massachusetts Boston Upward Bound Program provides educational support for high school students grade 9 – 12 of multicultural backgrounds. The goal of the program is to prepare participants for a post-secondary education by providing them with cultural enrichment and academic that is positive and nurturing.
Background Information
Upward Bound is a TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. As a TRiO program, its overarching goal and mission is to help students to overcome class, social, academic and cultural barriers to higher education. Program services include: assistance in choosing a college; tutoring; personal and financial counseling; career counseling; assistance in applying to college; workplace and college visits; special instruction in reading, writing, study skills and mathematics; assistance in applying for financial aid; and academic assistance in high school.
UMass Boston’s Upward Bound Program was founded in 1965, and for 37 years continues to prepare its participants for higher education. Participants receive instruction in literature, composition, foreign language, mathematics and science after school and during the summer. In addition to the Upward Bound program housed at UMass Boston, there are 681 programs in operation throughout the United States and it’s territories.
The UMass Boston Upward Bond Program serves one hundred low - income, first generation college bound students recruited from Dorchester Educational Complex, Jeremiah E. Burke, Madison Park, South Boston Educational Complex and West Roxbury Educational Complex. These students attend workshops, seminar and academic classes, as well as receive academic and career counseling and individual tutoring in an after school program throughout the academic year and an intensive six-week residential summer session.

Senior Spotlight
Anna Le - Madison Park High School
Class of 06'
Anna has been a student in the Upward Bound program for almost two years. This fall, with the help of the Upward Bound staff she applied to ten colleges. Anna was accepted to Bates College, Trinity College, St. Michael's College, Umass Amherst, Clark University, Emmanuel College, Umass Boston and wait-listed at Mt. Holyoke. After some soul searching, Anna has decided to attend Bates College in the fall. For Anna Upward Bound helped her better herself and her future. In her own words:"I'm extremely grateful".
