Who: UMASS Boston - Upward Bound Summer Program
What:
Family Day is an annual Upward Bound Summer event, where students get an opportunity to display showcase their talents academically and artistically. This is the one venue where friends, family and alumni get an opportunity to see the students efforts throughout the summer reflected through dance, song, poetry, academic and art displays, and various fashion exhibits. The event is always a momentous occasion and promises to continue in that very tradition this year. Upward Bound welcomes you to join us in support of our student dedication to forever be Upward Bound.

Professional Experience
Prior to rejoining Goodwin Procter in 2004, Mr. Budd served as Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel at John Hancock Financial Services Inc., where he was responsible for directing all of the company's legal activities as well as overseeing the compliance, human resources, governmental affairs and community relations for the organization. Before joining Hancock, Mr. Budd was Group President-New England at Bell Atlantic Corporation (now Verizon Communications), where he was responsible for policy, regulatory, and legislative functions for the New England states served by the company.
Before entering the private sector, Mr. Budd had been Associate Attorney General of the United States, appointed to the position by President George H.W. Bush in 1992. He oversaw the Civil Rights, Environmental, Tax, Civil and Anti-Trust divisions at the Department of Justice, as well as the Bureau of Prisons. From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Budd was the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, serving as the state's chief federal prosecutor and representing the federal government in all matters involving civil litigation. During this time, he was recognized for his efforts in combating drugs, street crime and gang violence. Mr. Budd has also served as a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, appointed to that position in 1994 by President Bill Clinton.

What: Upward Bound celebrates the graduation of the class of 2006. Boston City Council Member Felix Arroyo will address the graduating seniors on their tremendous achievement.

Trip to Washington DC
15 Massachusetts Trio Professionals and two MA Alumni visited Washington DC on Tuesday, March 28 to advocate for the restoration of GEAR Up, Talent Search and Upward Bound and request an increase in funding for the Trio programs. The alumni were Kalynda Gonzales (UMASS Boston McNair) and Josette Teneus (UMASS Boston Upward Bound). The contingency met with all 12 congressional offices and spoke directly to Congressman Barney Frank, Congressman Delahunt, and Congressman Olver. All offices expressed support for the programs and a 100 million dollar increase for all Trio programs. UMass Boston - Upward Bound's Director Robert Blaney and Senior Counselor Descatur Potier were among the MEOA members advocating for TRIO programs in Washington D.C.
