JOB DESCRIPTION FOR ACADEMIC YEAR INSTRUCTIONAL POSITIONS *
Program Hours:
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5:45 p.m.
Program Objectives
The goal of the Upward Bound Program is to provide participants with the skills
and motivation necessary for access to and success in post-secondary education.
Upward Bound offers an array of academic and personal enrichment and college/career
services designed to supplement public high school education and tailored to
address individual student needs.
Instructor
Responsibilities
- Participate
in staff orientation
- Facilitate
one subject (Math or English/Verbal) of standardized test preparation (3:30-4:30)
and one section of structured study hall (from 4:30-5:45)
- Participate
in weekly teacher meetings from 5:45-6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays or Thursdays
- Complete written
evaluations of student academic progress every three weeks
- Complete final
written evaluations of students
Application
Process
Interested persons should submit:
- A resume
- A 1-2 page
narrative that includes a discussion of:
- Your teaching
philosophy
- How you would
facilitate an MCAS or SAT preparatory course (Please specify content area
and test preference.)
- How you would
run a structured study hall with students of varying skill levels
- Your teaching
strengths and the areas in which you would need support
Qualifications
- Bachelor's
degree in a relevant field. Master's degree preferred.
- Teaching experience,
preferably with urban youth.
- Subject knowledge
of high school Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry, World Language, History
and/or Social Studies.
- Demonstrated
familiarity with the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS)
or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
- Demonstrated
experience with a multi-racial, multi-ethnic population.
- Demonstrated
teaching philosophy and methods that encourage the development of active and
independent learning habits.

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR TUTOR YEAR INSTRUCTIONAL POSITIONS *
Program Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5:45 p.m.
Additonal tutoring hours are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and after program hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Starts at $10/hr for graduate students

Program Objectives

Tutor Responsibilities
- Participate in staff orientation on Tuesday, September 27, 2005; 4:00-5:00 p.m.
- Assist an instructor with one section of standardized test preparation (S.A.T. and M.C.A.S.) and structured study hall from 3:3-5:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Optional: tutor individual students on Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays, as your schedule permits.
- Communicate regularly with supervisor and instructors about student needs, progress and achievement.
- Participate in weekly tutor meetings.
- Coordinate student activities and chaperone field trips.
- Provide supervision of students.
- Perform office work, as needed.
Qualifications
- Matriculating graduate student or undergraduate with sophomore standing or higher.
- Subject knowledge of high-school mathematics, English, biology, chemistry, physics, world languages, history and/or social studies.
- Tutoring experience, preferably with urban youth.
- Demonstrated experience with a multi-racial, multi-ethnic population.
- Demonstrated ability to assist others in understanding and mastering academic work.
- Sensitivity to the needs of urban high school students.

Program Objectives
The goal of the Upward Bound Program is to provide participants with the skills
and motivation necessary for access to and success in post-secondary education.
Upward Bound offers an array of academic, personal enrichment and college/career
services designed to supplement public high school education and tailored to
address specific student needs. Summer courses may include mathematics (through
pre-calculus), science, computer science, and literature and composition.
Instructor
Responsibilities
- Participate
in staff orientation week. Full participation is a condition of employment
- Develop and
teach course(s) to students enrolled in the Program
- Work collaboratively
with the other instructors to ensure that related courses are integrated
- Participate
in weekly teacher meetings
- Complete evaluations
of student progress every two weeks
- Complete final
evaluations of students and a final course summary
- Instructors
who reside on campus will have some additional responsibilities

Full-time, 7-week
summer RESIDENTIAL position
Dates:
Late June-MidAugust
DUTIES &
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate
in staff orientation week. Full participation is a condition of employment
- Oversee the
dormitory and supervise the residential counselors on a full-time basis
- Coordinate
all dormitory/extracurricular activities
- Conduct daily
group residential staff meetings (and individual meetings, as needed)
- Provide one-on-one
personal/academic counseling support, as needed
- Remain highly
visible to students and staff throughout the course of each day
- Assist in the
supervision of field trips, cultural events and recreational activities
- Patrol dormitory
grounds during night duty
- Attend daily
staff and community meetings
- Complete necessary
evaluation forms distributed by administrators
- Assist in dorm/event
set-up and clean up throughout the summer session
- Communicate
daily with staff members
- Enforce Upward
Bound rules and regulations
- Live and work
on-site for the duration of the summer program and training
- Carry out any
other duties as assigned by the staff
QUALIFICATIONS
- Matriculating
college junior, senior, or graduate student with some supervisory experience
strongly preferred, but not required
- Some tutoring/counseling
experience working with low-income and/or culturally diverse students
- Demonstrated
sensitivity to the needs of high school students
- Demonstrated
ability to coordinate student activities
- Must be highly
energetic
- Valid Massachusettss
driver license preferred but not required

students
- Regularly meet
with the instructors of the courses to which you are assigned
- Remain highly
visible to students and staff throughout the course of each day
- Attend daily
staff and community meetings
- Complete necessary
evaluation forms distributed by administrators
- Assist in dorm/event
set-up and clean up throughout the summer session
- Communicate
daily with staff members
- Enforce Upward
Bound rules and regulations
- Live and work
on-site for the duration of the summer program and training
- Carry out any
other duties as assigned by the staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Matriculating
